The main tourist season starts at Easter and runs until October; peak periods are in spring and autumn, when the tour buses pour in and tourists are herded around like cattle. Numerous outdoor festivals and concerts and the fact that Romans desert the city for the beaches and mountains, which means very light traffic and a less-crowded city centre, makes summer almost worth the heat. If you do
visit in summer, try to hit the sites early, have some rest after the lunch and then head out again to take advantage of the cooler evening. Please note that some restaurants and shops close for the month of August. Winters are usually mild with few tourists and some fun events around Christmas time.
Rome has more attractions and sites of interest than almost any other
city in the world. Top attractions in Rome include the Roman Collosseum, the Forum and the Pantheon. One of the most romantic spots in Rome is the Trevi fountain, which together with the nearby Spanish Steps provides one of the most instantly recognisable parts of the city. If you have the time, pay a visit to the gardens of the Villa Borghese - a calm and peaceful oasis of green in the city where you can see some great statues. You can get cheap flights to Rome and good value package holidays throughout the year, but it is advisable to book well in advance during the peak times such as Christmas and Easter.
